Coaching

Allison was able to demystify the most intimidating parts of publishing a book: marketing and event planning! She is knowledgeable and creative and helped me brainstorm ideas for events and venues that I never would have come up with on my own. She is also very organized and was able to break things down so the tasks feel doable and easy to understand. Before I met with her [for my first book, Midsummer Mayhem], I felt anxious and overwhelmed at the thought of planning and promoting events; now I feel excited!

I was stuck—in a funk—had no forward motion on getting my picture book out into the hands and hearts of children. Allison changed that picture! With the perfect blend of understanding, nudging, and sharing her vast marketing knowledge, Allison got me moving forward! My only disappointment was my time with her went by so fast!

After attending Allison’s fantastic workshop, I met with her one-on-one to further develop my event plans. She brings creativity, experience, and strategic thinking. I recommend Allison to authors who want to prepare for their book launch!

I Love You for Miles and Miles

Allison provided excellent developmental edits in the form of a reader's report for my adult science fiction novel. I had never hired an editor before, and I was unsure what to expect. I appreciated that she laid out the necessary edits simply and logically, making my job in the next draft a little easier. If you are at the stage where you are searching for an editor, she is an excellent choice with her wealth of knowledge on craft, background in reading literature of all types, and her personal understanding of a writer's life.

Working with Allison was wonderful. She listened to my concerns and goals about marketing my picture book. She then created an action plan that considered my strengths and interests but also pushed me to think about new opportunities. Ultimately, I left our coaching session with concrete (and sustainable!) steps I am currently taking to promote my book.

Allison was extremely helpful with specific ideas about my book launch and associated celebration. She was thoroughly prepared for our session together and understood where I needed the most encouragement and guidance. I feel confident that she is on deck if I have further questions and genuinely cares that the launch and other marketing endeavors go well.

Allison was highly engaged and attuned to my needs even before the start of our session. The pre-session paperwork and agenda-setting was extremely useful in guiding our conversation and maximizing our consultation hour. Her guidance was thorough and, most importantly for me, honest, particularly in the areas where I have room for growth.

I left our session with a wealth of ideas and actionable steps for marketing and self-development as I work on finishing my first novel. Our brainstorming session was time and money very well spent, and I would recommend Allison's consultation services for anyone looking to better understand the authorial and literary marketing world.

Workshops & Seminars

Absolutely loved this class. Allison was engaging, open, thoughtful, insightful. It was a relief to be in (virtual) community with other mother writers even just for a few hours on a Saturday morning.

As a writer of fantasy fiction, I’ve attended quite a few world-building workshops and seminars - there’s always something new to learn. Allison’s world-building workshop was, by far, the most instructive and useful one. The workshop was a mix of lecture, discussion, and writing exercises. The writing exercise was extremely insightful and introduced easy techniques to apply to anyone’s writing. I left the workshop with lessons that are easy to remember and integrate into my own writing practice, and I highly recommend Allison’s World-building class (and anything she teaches, frankly!).

Allison's workshop on building a successful bookstore event astonished me — it was so densely packed with real-world insight and ideas I could actually use. And she is incredibly helpful one-on-one too. I'd highly recommend her services to any author looking for help maximizing the impact of their marketing and publicity efforts.

From start to finish, Allison was engaging, highly informative, and funny. The 3 hour [event seminar] flew by, packed with her wise advice. She used her teaching skills to keep things both flowing smoothly and allowing for specific questions, collaboration, and networking. I would happily take future courses by Allison!

I loved this class. It's always been a topic that interests me, and Allison did a wonderful job guiding our discussions and responding to student questions as they came up. I thought her perspective on the marketing side of genre was an incredibly valuable one and important to this kind of discussion, and I loved the exercise where we examined our favorite books as objects to see how nuanced the packaging of a literary speculative book can be.

Allison gives a bang-up [marketing] workshop! She is thorough but concise, informative but not overwhelming. She really knows her material and delivers it in a knowledgeable, approachable way. I left her presentation with many new ideas and resources. Highly recommended!

Goldilocks and the Three Pirates

Allison was incredibly friendly and warm and facilitated a thought-provoking discussion, taking us through several excerpts from YA novels and challenging us to identify the ways the characters and their worlds intersected. “You can’t have worldbuilding without characters,” she explained, “and you can’t have characters without worldbuilding.”

We talked about the dangers of lumping worldbuilding details into long exposition that keeps the story from moving, and how to strike a balance. We also discussed the different things first and third person narrators — as well as multiple points of view — can bring to the table when it comes to worldbuilding and character development. Allison also took us through a few different writing exercises that underscored how much one’s personal perspective can play into worldbuilding, and vice versa. The course was productive and fun and gave me new ideas for editing my novel-in-progress!
